Hamburger Stroganoff

Hamburger Stroganoff is such a succulent and mouthwatering recipe. It’s an old family favorite I found in the 1972 edition Betty Crocker cookbook. Ground beef, mushrooms and onions are combined in a flavorful cream of chicken and sour cream sauce and then served over whatever kind of noodles you prefer.

It’s comfort food not health food, but the taste of this dish is incredible. It’s so easy to make, too, with only a few steps. You can have dinner on the table in less than half an hour with this quick recipe. On top of that it’s quite economical.

When my children were little they loved having this easy main dish for supper. I loved the convenience of being able to whip this dish up at a moment’s notice. Because I always kept ground beef in the freezer and all the other ingredients on hand I was always prepared when it came to pulling this dish out of the hat!

My family really enjoyed the savory tastes of the delicious stroganoff sauce. Rather than using a cream of mushroom soup this recipe calls for cream of chicken which provides a fuller, richer flavor to the casserole.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Our family digs in heartily to this favorite main dish. Serve Hamburger Stroganoff over any kind of noodle–we like dumpling noodles the best but any kind will do in  a pinch. Serve with a salad or side vegetable and you’re done. A quick and easy dinner is ready in about 30 minutes!

Here’s what I did.

Hamburger Stroganoff

I used these ingredients.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Brown ground beef in a large skillet. Add onions and continue browning. Cook until ground beef is completely browned. Drain any fat.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Add minced garlic from a jar or fresh garlic, salt, pepper, flour and drained mushrooms. Stir to combine.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Add a can of cream of chicken soup.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Add sour cream and freshly chopped parsley or dried parsley. Stir to combine.

Hamburger Stroganoff

Stir again to combine and heat through. Meanwhile, bring noodles to a boil in pasta pot and cook until done. Drain, add a little butter or olive oil and swirl it around so the noodles don’t stick together.  That’s it!!! Serve Hamburger Stroganoff over noodles.

To serve, dish up noodles on a plate. Top with stroganoff. Garnish with more fresh or dried parsley if desired. My kids loved this recipe growing up. I think yours will too.

  1. In large skillet, cook and stir ground beef and onion in butter until onion is tender.

  2. Stir in flour, salt, garlic salt, pepper and mushrooms; cook 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

  3. Stir in soup; simmer uncovered 10 minutes.

  4. Stir in sour cream; heat through.

  5. Serve over noodles.

  6. Sprinkle with snipped parsley (or dried parsley).
